Whitney Elizabeth Houston was born to a musically inclined family on 9 August 1963, in Newark New Jersey the daughter of gospel star Cissy Houston (nee Emily Lee Drinkard) and John Russell Houston Jr. and cousin of singer Dionne Warwick. When she was a kid she performed in the New Hope Baptist Church choir in Newark. By the time she reached the age of 15years old, Houston was singing professionally with backing vocals alongside her mother in Chaka Khan's 1978 song Im Every Woman. Her mother, Jermaine and Lou Rawls were some of the artists she backed up. She was also briefly as a model for Seventeen Magazine in 1981. Her first gig was as a featured vocalist for the New York-based funk band Material as well. It was her quality of her work as a vocalist with them that attracted the attention of several major record companies, such as Arista which she signed with in 1983 and where she would remain for the remainder of her professional career. Her debut album Whitney Houston was released in 1985, and was the most-seller album of a debut artist. The album All My Love was released in 1985 and became a number one smash. It sold three million copies during its initial year, as well as 25 million around the world. She won her first six Grammys.
