Whitney Elizabeth Houston was born to a musically inclined family on the 9th of August, 1963. She was born in Newark New Jersey the daughter of gospel singer Cissy Houston (nee Emily Lee Drinkard) and John Russell Houston Jr. as well as a cousin of the singing sensation Dionne Warwick. Her first singing gig was in a choir at the church she attended The New Hope Baptist Church in Newark as a young child at the age of 15, she had begun singing backing vocals professionally alongside her mother on Chaka Khans 1978 hit Im Every Woman. In 1981, she worked as a fashion model and appeared on the Seventeen Cover. Also, she provided backing vocals to Jermaine and Lou Rawls. The singer was first a featured singer for New York-based New York Funk band Material. The quality of her vocal work earned her the attention of major record label Arista where she signed up in 1983. Whitney Houston's debut Whitney Houston album was released in 1985. It became one of the most successful albums of an artist. Tracks like the title track, The Most Beautiful Love of All, How Will I Know If You Give Good Love or Save All My Love were all released from the album. They allowed Houston to reach the seven US top tens, which surpassed even those of The Beatles. In its initial US year, the album was has sold in excess of 3 million units. After that, it was to be listened to by more than more than 25 million worldwide which earned her the first Grammy. Whitney was her first album.
