Queen Latifah
Dana Elaine Owens - better popularly referred to as Queen Latifah - is an American performer, actress and a singer. Queen Latifah's work in music film and television has been recognized with a Golden Globe award two Screen Actors Guild Awards two Image Awards a Grammy Award six additional Grammy nominations an Emmy Award nomination and an Academy Award nomination. Queen Latifah's parents were Lancelot and Rita Owens. They were both Police officers. Rita was a Newark New Jersey teacher who taught in Irvington High School. Latifah's parents divorced when she was 10 years old. Latifah was a student at the Catholic school in Newark, the state of New Jersey. She was also raised in her family's Baptist Church. Latifah is a word that means gentle and gentle. The name was given by her cousin to her at the age of aged eight. Always tall, the 5'10 tall Latifah was a power forward for her high school basketball team. She sang "Home" from The Wiz during a play at her highschool. Latifah became a beatboxer for her band, the Ladies Fresh rap band. Latifah was a part of the original Flavor Unit group, which included several MCs as well as DJ Mark 45 King. Mark James aka the DJ Mark the 40 King, created a demo of the hip-hop Princess of the Posse by Queen Latifah. The recording was sent to Yo! MTV Raps Freddy. The track caught the attention of Tommy Boy Music employee Dante Ross who was signed by Latifah and in 1988 issued her debut single Wrath of My Madness.
